DPP for SMEs: Budget, Team and Roadmap
Small and medium exporters can't afford to wait for ESPR clarity. Exemptions, realistic budgets and an 18-month preparation plan for SMEs.
By Izvera Team
DPP isn't only a big-brand problem. Thousands of SMEs ship to the EU and will need compliant DPPs by 2027. Here's a realistic plan.
"Does this apply to us?" — Yes, with nuances
ESPR allows for partial exemptions and longer transitions for micro firms (under 10 employees, ≤€2M turnover) and small firms (under 50 employees). But if you export, those exemptions narrow fast — an EU importer can demand a full DPP regardless of your size.
The practical reality: B2B pressure precedes regulation
Many SMEs are getting DPP requests from brand customers before the 2027 mandate. Inditex, H&M, Decathlon, IKEA started asking for DPP-aligned data in 2026. So:
- Regulation: 2027
- Customer demand: 2026
- Realistic preparation: 2025-2026
Three-step SME plan
1. Inventory (1 month, low cost)
- Which of your products fall under which delegated act?
- Which customer asks for which data format?
- Which certifications (GOTS, OEKO-TEX, FSC, etc.) do you already have?
2. Platform selection (2 months)
SaaS DPP platforms have SME-friendly monthly tiers. With Izvera:
- Starter: limited SKU count, low monthly fee
- Mid: full multi-tier supplier onboarding
- Enterprise: custom
3. Pilot and roll-out (3-6 months)
Pilot on one product family, then expand. Supplier onboarding is the longest task in this phase.
Common SME mistakes
- "Wait until the rules are clear" — Twelve months is not enough to map a supply chain. Late = lose market.
- Trying to do it in Excel — DPP's immutability requirement cannot be met in a spreadsheet.
- Leaving supplier onboarding to the last month — Your suppliers are under the same pressure. Move first.
- Manual certificate entry — Automated certificate verification saves time and audit risk.
